Converting a basement into living space

Nearly every homeowner has at one time or another considered adding more living area to his home. For this reason, converting a basement into living space is a popular type of remodeling. But converting a basement is not always easy. Typically, the older the home, the more challenging the use of basement space can be. In really old houses, there’s often insufficient headroom in the basement to turn the area into living space, there may be no floor slab, and there may also be moisture issues, though these are not restricted to century-old homes.

If you have decided to convert your basement into living area, there are several things you should consider. Three of the primary considerations in converting basement to living space are a large enough area, adequate head room, and convenient access. When you are converting a basement into living space, remember that you will need to have the proper safety exits for emergency such as a fire. One of the safety measures that can be taken is to place a doorway directly to the outside so you don’t have to try to get up a flight of stairs and then through the house to escape a fire.
