Painting the Exterior of Your Home

Exterior painting projects break naturally into tow stages: preparation and application. Preparation is the foundation of a good paint job, allowing paint to look its best and last a long time. The most important step in preparation stage is preparing exterior surfaces. Although good-quality paint and proper application techniques are important, surface preparation is usually the most important factor in determining the success of a painting job.

House paint applied over a well prepared surface can be expected to stay in good condition for four or five years. If you have poor prep, the paint job will last only about two years. The first step of prep work is to closely inspect the surface and remove all loose material such as flaking paint, dust, etc. To ensure this, most surfaces will require scraping, sanding, and washing. If necessary, patch all cracks and nail holes in plaster walls before you apply paint.

Since painting can be delayed by weather, scheduling for exterior painting must take into consideration seasonal and climatic conditions. Exterior painting is best done when the temperature is neither too hot nor too cool. When painting a house’s exterior, you can reach the top sections by using ladders of various heights. Be careful when using ladder, you can read my previous articles about how to use ladder safely.
